He is an opponent of National Socialism and one of the leading “Dableiber” (the people who refused to leave their South Tyrolean homes behind and move to the German Reich). Had the Wehrmacht caught him, he would have ended in one of the German concentration camps. August escapes to Switzerland. During his exile he writes a diary. In August on the run director Andreas Pichler and his father follow the traces of Andreas’ grandfather August, from South Tyrol to the different locations of his exile in Switzerland.
